The Queer Collective's Resources for Students

your safety is our priority. here are some resources to help make your life on campus a tad bit easier :)

What to do when your email has your deadname.

As there is unfortunately no way to replace your deadname in FLAME's records, your institution email is likely to have your deadname. To have professors address you correctly, it is best that you send them an email prior to the first class. Here is a template you can use:

Dear Professor,I hope this email finds you well! I am excited to join you onboard for [course name] starting next week!I have written this email to let you know that I do not go by the name that this email appears to be sent by [or the gender marker on my profile]. My name is [insert name] and I identify as [xyz]. My pronouns are [insert pronouns]. I would appreciate it if I were referred to as stated above.I look forward to being in your class and making the most of the opportunities I'll find!Regards,
[Name]

In case you want to book a session with a counsellor, kindly send an email to [email protected], briefly mentioning your reason for visit. You will be assigned a counsellor who can guide you further. Alternatively, you can also do an SOS walk-in in case of emergencies, and an available counsellor will help you accordingly.

How to be a Respectful Ally on Campus

  • Make sure to ask people their pronouns when you first interact with them.

  • Be respectful of these pronouns in all contexts and conversations.

  • To ‘dead-name’ is to call a transgender or non-binary person by their birth name after they have chosen a diiferent name for themselves. Your peers’ names may differ from the names indicated on their record. Remember to refer to them by their chosen name.

  • Recognise the sensitivity of issues surrounding gender and sexual orientation; Do not make queer individuals the punchline of your joke and refrain from using offensive slurs.

  • Do not ask invasive questions about one’s identity or experiences. If you’re unsure about specific aspects of the Queer community, please utilise the resources available online.

  • Do not assume anyone’s identity. Unless an individual specifically states their identity and asks to be referred according to that, it is best to use gender-neutral markers for them (ex: they/them pronouns instead of he/she)

  • If you get something wrong, correct it and move on. It’s better to correct your mistakes rather than linger on them!
